THE WORK

Subcontract bricklaying work

Bricklaying is usually let as a package by the builder and then crewed by a bricklaying business, which brings in subcontract brickies and labourers to keep the gang at full strength.

Laying rates and the quality of your joints speak for themselves, so photos of finished walls and a clear list of the work you have done help companies choose you quickly.

Bricklaying licensing in NSW and Queensland

NSW. Bricklaying is a licensed home building trade in NSW. In NSW you need a contractor licence for residential building or trade work valued at more than $5,000 in labour and materials, including GST. Check the licence category for your work with Building Commission NSW before you quote.

Queensland. The QBCC has a Bricklaying and blocklaying trade contractor licence class. In Queensland the QBCC generally requires a licence for building work valued over $3,300. If you subcontract to a licensed builder you need a contractor licence of the right class for your work. If you subcontract to a licensed trade contractor you may not need your own contractor licence, though occupational licences still apply.

Licensing rules change and depend on the work. Always confirm with the regulator in your state.
