THE WORK

Subcontract tiling work

Tiling comes late in a build and is often on the critical path to handover, so builders need tilers who can start on time and finish cleanly. Many tilers work as subcontractors to builders, bathroom renovation businesses and tiling contractors.

Waterproofing often goes hand in hand with tiling. If you are qualified to waterproof, say so, because it changes who can do the whole job.

  • Bathroom and wet area tiling
  • Kitchen splashbacks and floors
  • Large format and porcelain
  • Commercial floors
  • External and pool tiling
  • Waterproofing, where qualified

Tiling licensing in NSW and Queensland

NSW. In NSW you need a contractor licence for residential building or trade work valued at more than $5,000 in labour and materials, including GST. Check the licence category for wall and floor tiling and for waterproofing with Building Commission NSW.

Queensland. The QBCC has a Wall and floor tiling trade contractor licence class. In Queensland the QBCC generally requires a licence for building work valued over $3,300. If you subcontract to a licensed builder you need a contractor licence of the right class for your work. If you subcontract to a licensed trade contractor you may not need your own contractor licence, though occupational licences still apply.

Licensing rules change and depend on the work. Always confirm with the regulator in your state.

In Queensland the QBCC has a Wall and floor tiling licence class and generally requires a licence for work over $3,300. In NSW a contractor licence is needed for residential work over $5,000; check the category for your work with Building Commission NSW.

How do builders find tilers before handover?

Post a Crew Call with the areas, tile type and your handover date so tilers can check they can meet it, then review Work Passports and hire.
