THE WORK

Subcontract electrical work

Electrical contractors often take on more work than their own staff can cover, so they bring in subcontract electricians for busy stretches, large commercial jobs or work in another region. Builders also engage electrical subcontractors directly for each project.

Because electrical work is licensed whatever its value, companies check licences before anything else. A complete Work Passport with your licence details, the types of work you do and your availability makes it simple for them to say yes.

  • Residential rough-in and fit-off
  • Commercial and industrial installs
  • Switchboards and upgrades
  • Data and communications cabling
  • Solar and battery installs
  • Maintenance and testing

Electrical licensing in NSW and Queensland

NSW. Specialist work, including electrical wiring, plumbing, drainage, gasfitting and air conditioning and refrigeration, needs a licence whatever it costs. That includes electrical wiring work of any size, so subcontract electricians need the right licence before they start.

Queensland. In Queensland, electrical work is licensed through the Electrical Safety Office rather than the QBCC. An electrician still needs a QBCC licence to do building work.

Licensing rules change and depend on the work. Always confirm with the regulator in your state.

FAQ

Electrical subcontractors: common questions

How do I find subcontract electrical work?

Set up a free Work Passport with your electrical licence, the work you do and your availability, then search for Crew Calls near you. Apply directly to electrical contractors and builders who post them.

Do subcontract electricians need a licence?

Yes. In NSW, electrical wiring work needs a licence whatever its cost. In Queensland, electrical licensing sits with the Electrical Safety Office. Check the requirements for your state before you start.

How do electrical contractors find extra sparkies?

Post a Crew Call for the electrical work, say whether it is residential or commercial, and add the site location and dates. Review applicants’ Work Passports, including their licences, then shortlist and hire.

Can I rehire electricians I have worked with?

Yes. Save the electricians you rate and invite them back to future Crew Calls, so busy periods do not start with a cold search.
