THE WORK

Subcontract painting work

Painting businesses grow and shrink their crews with the work, and builders need painters to hit handover dates. That makes painting one of the easier trades to pick up subcontract work in, if companies can see you are reliable.

Say whether you work on new builds, repaints, commercial or industrial coatings, and whether you spray, so you are matched to the right jobs.

  • New residential builds
  • Interior and exterior repaints
  • Commercial and strata work
  • Spray finishes
  • Industrial and protective coatings
  • Preparation and patching

Painting licensing in NSW and Queensland

NSW. Painting is a licensed home building trade in NSW. In NSW you need a contractor licence for residential building or trade work valued at more than $5,000 in labour and materials, including GST. Check the licence category for your work with Building Commission NSW before you quote.

Queensland. The QBCC has a Painting and decorating trade contractor licence class. In Queensland the QBCC generally requires a licence for building work valued over $3,300. If you subcontract to a licensed builder you need a contractor licence of the right class for your work. If you subcontract to a licensed trade contractor you may not need your own contractor licence, though occupational licences still apply.

Licensing rules change and depend on the work. Always confirm with the regulator in your state.
