THE WORK

Subcontract plumbing work

Plumbing work on a build comes in stages: drainage and in-ground work early, rough-in during framing, then fit-off at the end. Plumbing businesses and builders use subcontract plumbers to cover those peaks without carrying extra staff all year.

Plumbing, drainage and gasfitting are licensed in every state, so licences come first when companies review applicants. Being clear about which parts of the job you do saves everyone time.

  • Drainage and in-ground work
  • Rough-in and fit-off
  • Hot water systems
  • Gasfitting
  • Roof plumbing and stormwater
  • Maintenance and service work

Plumbing licensing in NSW and Queensland

NSW. Specialist work, including electrical wiring, plumbing, drainage, gasfitting and air conditioning and refrigeration, needs a licence whatever it costs. Plumbing, drainage and gasfitting all fall into that group.

Queensland. The QBCC licenses plumbing and drainage at any value, both as a contractor licence and as an occupational licence for the person doing the work. If you subcontract to a licensed builder you need a contractor licence of the right class for your work. If you subcontract to a licensed trade contractor you may not need your own contractor licence, though occupational licences still apply.

Licensing rules change and depend on the work. Always confirm with the regulator in your state.

FAQ

Plumbing subcontractors: common questions

How do I find subcontract plumbing work?

Create a free Work Passport listing your plumbing, drainage and gasfitting licences and the stages you do, set your travel radius and apply for Crew Calls from plumbing businesses and builders near you.

Do subcontract plumbers need a licence?

Yes. In NSW, plumbing, drainage and gasfitting need a licence whatever the job costs. In Queensland the QBCC requires plumbing and drainage licences regardless of value, including an occupational licence for the person doing the work.

How do builders find plumbers for a project?

Post a Crew Call for the plumbing stage you need, or run a plumbing trade package through the Tender Hub if you want priced bids. Review licences and experience before you hire or award.

Can plumbers find drainage-only work?

Yes. Say in your Work Passport that you specialise in drainage, and look for Crew Calls that describe drainage or civil plumbing work.
